Facebook Fan Page or Facebook Group?

The question that most businesses have when implementing a marketing strategy on Facebook is whether to set up a fan page or a group. Both serve different purposes and it's important you make the right choice from the outset as you could be left wasting valuable time or finding you have to start afresh again at a later date having already got fans/members on Facebook.

As far as setting up a business profile on Facebook goes, I would recommend a fan page predominantly every time. Why you may ask? Here are my reasons:-

  • Fan pages are geared more towards brands, companies and public figures
  • There are no limits to the amount of fans you can have
  • Updates to your page appear in your members real time news feed
  • You can create custom tabs using FBML (Facebook Markup Language)
  • Pages can host applications allowing you to develop your own and associate with your page
  • Pages can be more personalised offering the opportunity of showing more content
  • Your public identity can be kept private so your updates appear from your business rather than your personal profile
  • Associate favourite/related pages

Facebook groups are more tailored towards shared interests and causes, ideal if you want to create a place for generic discussion on a topic. Whilst they do also accommodate creating company groups, this was available before Facebook introduced fan pages however there is no reason why you shouldn't set up a Facebook group for your business as well as a fan page but there are various limitations and less opportunities for personalisation and marketing.
